The Dominican Republic enjoys warm tropical weather year round. Depending on the location, an average day may see full sun or a sun/cloud mix. The average year-round temperatures are 78 to 88 F. The cooler season is November through April while the temperature is at its warmest from May through October. The mean annual temperature ranges from 21°C in the mountainous regions to 25°C on the plains and the coast. The average temperature in Santo Domingo in January is 23.9°C and 27.2°C in July. Visitors to the island can expect to find sunshine and blue skies any time of the year.
The Dominican Republic is a large island and although it may be raining on one coast it may be perfectly dry and sunny on the other. Some areas of the island such as the southwest are drier followed by the southeastern and eastern regions which include La Romana, Bayahibe and Punta Cana. The wettest areas of the country are Samana and Puerto Plata. Keep in mind though, that the areas that receive the most rainfall also have the lushest and greenest environments.
From December to April the island experiences its coolest months when morning temperatures may dip to 65F (18C). By mid afternoon the temperature will rise to above 80F (27C). The coolest temperatures occur in the mountain regions near Constanza, where temperatrures in the freezing range have been recorded.During these months the east coast experiences windy conditions, and in the spring kite flying becomes a popular activity.
Late spring is usually the wettest time of the year, with short spring showers occuring in the late afternoon as opposed to the mornings. August and September are peak hurricane seasons in the Caribbean and are also the hottest months of the year with temperatrures reaching 90(F) and higher. The fall, like the spring tends to see more precipatation, however rainstorms in the Dominican Republic are short, most lasting less than 10 minutes and usually followed by a clear sunny sky.
