History
Located 100 kilometers away from the capital, La Romana is one of the most complete tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic, offering natural beauty, cultural heritage and upscale tourist.
Legend has it the name “Romana” comes from an ancient Roman-type scale used for weighing goods and products, which were transported, through the port in the sixteenth century. Still others say that the name comes from the Indian name given to the river, which quietly flows from the interior of the island, Bomana.
The urban development of La Romana began in 1917 with the launch of a large sugar mill that facilitated the cultivation of the numerous sugar cane plantations, which still surround La Romana-Bayahibe to this day. The company responsible for the growth and success of this region is the Central Romana Corporation, ltd. boasting the biggest sugar mill in the Caribbean.
Today the main source of income for the region is tourism. La Romana-Bayahibe has become one of the most exclusive tourist destinations in the Caribbean due to the area’ beautiful beaches, internationally branded resort, charismatic people, and enchanting landscapes.
The city of La Romana is renown as the birthplace of one of the Caribbean’s most exclusive resorts, Casa de Campo, and the Altos de Chavon artesian village. Repeatedly recognized as one of the “Best Golf Resorts” in the world, the award winning resort boasts the highly challenging “Teeth of the Dog” P.B. Dye designed course.
Located just 25 minutes away from the city of La Romana, is Bayahibe, a quaint traditional fishing village with some of the island’s most exquisite white sand beaches and all inclusive resorts. From Bayahibe there are a plethora of off island excursions to the islands of Saona, Catalina and Catalinita, where you will be able to experience the natural beauty of the National Park of the East.
You can also visit the National Park of the East directly from Bayahibe at the “Padre Nuestro” (Our Father) Archeological and Ecotouristic Trail as well as numerous other natural, historical, or cultural attractions.
