Ponce de León Fort Museum
Take a step back in to the time to an era when Spanish conquistadors settled in the east coast of the Dominican Republic.
A building that remains true to the Renaissance architecture of the period, built of stone and mahogany trim, dates back to 1508.
After sailing the cool waters of the Yuma River, a walk around will lead you to an encounter with the past, the House-Fortress of Spanish Conquistador Juan Ponce De León.
Its singular exterior door transports you to the sixteenth century, where furnishings and details linked to the era, like the shield of the conqueror and his personal belongings, will make you forget the outside world that can barely be seen through its tiny windows, fact that acknowledges the protection provided by the fortress and the importance it represented at the time.
From this house Ponce de León led the war that ended the resistance of the Indians, who inhabited the current reserve Parque Nacional del Este, then continuing the war effort from the village of Boca de Yuma, where he undertook the conquest of Puerto Rico.![]()
It was restored and converted into a museum respecting its original architectural design, located on the outskirts of the town of San Rafael del Yuma.
The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, excluding Mondays.
