Cueva de las Maravillas

Discover its rock formations along marvelous pictorial galleries.

Through trails of approximately 240 linear meters and through passages and special ramps (and a modern-day elevator which allows the physically-challanged to visit its interiors) come across virgins, mythological gods, horses, dragons and angels in the pictographic gallery of this impressive attraction: Cueva de las Maravillas. The water mirror, the great panel, the castle area, throne and shadow gallery are some of the interesting sites and attractions you'll encounter as you embark on this approximately 45 minute tour.
Inside rock formations, dating a hundred thousand years, acquired whimsical figures over the flow of time, allowing the beholder to unwind his imagination.  

In the back of the room, fully isolated remaining arts of amazing imagery, a mural about three meters long and two meters high displays a death ritual, a table inmortalizes Yayael's sacrifice, a mythical Taino killed by his father, the supreme god Yaya. Having had treked this far, we've reached The Great Panel and come before a Taino rock art masterpiece. The funerary nature of these cave drawings was scrutinized by French expert Alain Gilbert in 1993.

Out of the 800 meters of interior labyrinths comprising the cavern, only 240 are used for touristic purposes, each outlined with exemplary rock art manifestations (up to 276 pictographs), in the form of stalactites, stalagmites, tapestries, pisolthics and columns. 
The cave was documented for the first time in October 1949 by Professor Francisco Richiez. Located between San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana, where the Soco and Cumayasa rivers divide.
