Diving In Caves

The Bayahibe and Parque Nacional del Este zone offers a large number of flooded caves where it is possible to dive and view the spelaeological highlights of greatest interest. The Dominican "cenotes" were called "jagueyes" among the indigenous inhabitants of the island, the Tainos. Within these underground lakes, the Tainos made offerings to their goddess Atabey, the Mother of Waters, but their normal use was as a source of water. As a result, ancient recipients used by the indians for collecting water are frequently found at the bottom of these streams.

The underwater galleries of the caves along Bayahibe and Parque Nacional del Este are extremely beautiful to visit and there are certain dive sites where it is possible to enjoy guided dives by specialized instructors with all the safety measures required by this technical type of scuba diving. It is important to underscore the appeal of the Chicho stream in Padre Nuestro, where interesting documentaries have been filmed and important research conducted by prestigious centers such as the University of Indiana and the Museo del Hombre dominicano (Museum of Dominican Man).
